Privacy Policy

Last updated 23 July 2026

TheQuizMap helps you find pub quizzes near you and know whether they’re actually on. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, and the rights you have over it. We’ve tried to keep it plain.

Who we are

TheQuizMap (“we”, “us”) provides this website and the pub-quiz directory on it. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), we are the “data controller” for the personal data described here.

If you have any questions about this policy or your data, get in touch through our contact form.

What we collect

We only collect what we need to run the service:

  • Account details — if you sign up, your email address and (optionally) a display name. Sign-in is handled by our authentication provider, Supabase.
  • Your activity — quizzes you save/follow, quizzes and nights you confirm as “on” or “off”, quizzes you submit, and any team results you log.
  • Location — if you tap “use my location”, your device’s approximate coordinates are used to find quizzes near you. If you type a postcode or place, we use that instead. See “Location data” below.
  • Technical data — basic logs such as IP address, browser type and pages visited, created automatically when you use the site.

How we use it

  • To show you quizzes near you and keep listings fresh and trustworthy.
  • To let you save quizzes and be told when one you follow is cancelled.
  • To run accounts, teams and host dashboards.
  • To review quiz submissions before they go live and prevent abuse or fake listings.
  • To understand how the site is used so we can improve it, and to keep it secure.

Our legal bases

Under UK GDPR we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Consent — for using your precise location, which we only access when you ask us to. You can withdraw this at any time in your browser.
  • Contract — to provide the account features you sign up for (saved quizzes, teams, hosting).
  • Legitimate interests — to keep the directory accurate, secure the site, and improve it, balanced against your rights.

Who we share it with

We don’t sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run the site, and only as needed:

  • Supabase — database, authentication and hosting of your account and activity data.
  • Vercel — hosting and delivery of the website, which processes technical/log data.
  • Mapping providers — we display maps and turn postcodes into coordinates using third-party map and geocoding services. A place or postcode you search may be sent to them to return results.
  • Google Analytics — we use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how the site is used, in aggregate, so we can improve it. It sets cookies and collects usage data such as pages viewed, approximate location and device type. See Google’s privacy policy.

We may also disclose data if required by law, or to protect our rights, users or the public.

Location data

We never track your location in the background. Precise location is only read at the moment you tap “use my location”, and it’s used to rank nearby quizzes — we don’t store a history of where you’ve been. You can decline or revoke location access in your browser settings at any time and still use the site by searching a place or postcode.

Cookies and similar technologies

We use a small number of cookies and local storage entries that are necessary for the site to work — for example to keep you signed in and to remember quizzes you’ve saved on this device.

We also use Google Analytics cookies to measure how the site is used, in aggregate. These aren’t essential; we don’t use advertising cookies, and we don’t sell your data. You can block analytics cookies through your browser settings or a browser extension.

How long we keep it

We keep account data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we’ll remove your personal data, except anything we’re required to keep by law or need to keep the directory accurate (for example, an anonymised record that a quiz was confirmed on a given night). Logs are kept for a limited period.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct data that’s wrong or incomplete.
  • Ask us to delete your data, or restrict or object to how we use it.
  • Withdraw consent (such as location access) at any time.
  • Ask for a copy of your data in a portable format.

To exercise any of these, use our contact form. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Children

TheQuizMap is intended for adults and isn’t directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the “last updated” date above, and for significant changes we’ll make it clear on the site.
